Conditions and Treatment Pathways

Thoracic surgery may involve investigation, biopsy, resection, or reconstruction depending on the diagnosis. Where appropriate, less invasive approaches are considered as part of treatment planning.

Conditions Treated

  • Lung cancer, including primary and metastatic disease
  • Pleural diseases and effusions
  • Pneumothorax
  • Mediastinal tumours
  • Chest wall deformities, tumours, and trauma

Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) uses a camera and specialised instruments through small incisions. For selected patients, this may reduce post-operative pain and support earlier recovery compared with more invasive open approaches.

Patient Suitability

Suitability depends on the diagnosis, imaging findings, lung function, symptoms, and overall medical fitness.

Typical Recovery Pathway

Days 1 to 3

In-hospital monitoring, pain control, breathing exercises, and early mobilisation.

Weeks 1 to 2

Wound recovery, light activity, and early follow-up depending on the operation performed.

Weeks 4 to 6

Gradual return to usual activity once healing, pathology review, and recovery progress are confirmed.
